The following table shows the elevation data recorded each evening from my Garmin eTrex Summit handheld GPS unit. Click the appropriate subsections in the navigation area on the left for graphical representation of elevation data.
The data indicates that I climbed a total of 51,042 vertical feet the entire trip!** My biggest uphill day was September 25 riding from Battle Mountain to Austin, NV for a total of 4671 vertical feet ending at 6670 feet for the day. Most of the day was actually rather flat, but as I approached the end of Nevada State Highway 305 I mysteriously climbed several hundred feet. As I described in my trip journal, I had the strange sensation of going downhill or at least of being on flat ground, when in reality I was climbing. I think I needed a break! And then once I hit US Hwy 6 (also known as The Loneliest Highway in the Nation), it was very steep going into Austin. The following day I climbed to my overall highest elevation of 7435 ft. first thing in the morning, followed by a second pass of 7200 feet only a few miles further. Oh, but what great downhills! ** Obviously my model of GPS isn't that good with the whole elevation change ability. The ending elevation for any day should reflect the difference of the total ascent and total descent for the day plus the previous day's ending elevation. They do not, as I did not end up at 2491 ft. BELOW sea level at the conclusion of my trip!
